Johnstone Strait, British Columbia
Out For Adventure has sea kayak guides in the area of the
Johnstone Strait oil spill.
As of earlier today the slick has
spread to a reported 14 kilometres long along the Vancouver
Island shore. Out For Adventure's
Orca Base Camp is located on the opposite side of the
strait and so far has been unaffected by the spill. Killer
whales have been in the area since the spill with a reported
50 whales having swam through the slick last night and
today
Sea Kayak Expedition in Johnstone Strait Reports
Out For Adventure Johnstone Strait Expedition guide Robyn
Crisford reported that the slick still seems to be on the
Vancouver Island side as of 7:30pm Tuesday.
Sea Kayak Base Camp Report
OFA Base Camp guide Matt Rowley reports that the
slick has also moved on to the North side of Johnstone
Strait against Hanson Island and that some large ships have
been in the area today working on cleanup. There has been
some media visiting the area by aircraft throughout the day,
but Rowley and his group managed to avoid the situation and
meet up with Killer Whales near Cracroft Point for a good
sea kayak whale encounter, and he says that the oil spill is
not affecting the OFA Orca Base Camp.
Heightened Awareness Required
This unfortunate event heightens the need for
environmental awareness, and may be a call
to action for more controls on how and where dangerous cargo
is shipped in this sensitive area.
There is still a chance to join a sea kayaking tour for our
Orca Base Camp to experience the Killer Whales and witness
first hand what is going on while this event unfolds.
Out For Adventure Ltd. expedition leader - Jim Martin
confirms that OFA's Johnston Strait sea kayaking tours are running
as scheduled for the balance of 2007.

According to recent media reports our government has decided
that it is ok to just leave the oil tanker with it's payload
of almost 10,000 litres of oil at the bottom of the ocean as
well as all the heavy equipment that was dropped off the
barge. Some environmental groups are demanding that the
wreck site be examined and action taken but so far -
nothing.
The oil seems to have dissipated and not immediately obvious
but the question again rises. Is this enough?
