2004 Orca
Sightings Report Notes
Orca
Encounters Tour
Killer Whale, Orca,
sightings report on Out For Adventure Tours into Johnstone
Strait.
Notes are entered every few tours.
This year has
started off just great! Our first tour saw the A36's, "the boys"
as well as the majestic Bald Eagle, seals and more. This was an
incredible way to begin the season, because A37, one of the
boys, was the whale that Out For Adventure adopted this year. We
see this as a very positive omen.
On subsequent trips we have enjoyed seeing the A36's, A12's,
A30's (all Orca Pods,) and more killer whales, Black bears, more
eagles, an Osprey, some deer (one of which calmly walked through
our camp stopping to look at all of us and providing great photo
ops,) mink, seals, Stellar sea lions, Humpback whales (quite
close,) Minke Whales and more. This has been a bumper crop start
to the season for our sea kayaking adventures, even the weather
has been great! On one trip we had an Orca resting line,
(basically sleeping Orcas,) swim past our group as we sat and
watched them surface and resurface in front of our kayaks. The
picture takers of the group will have incredible pictures and we
all will have the memories for years to come.
Our hydrophone listening has been very interesting as well. We
have sat and watched the Orcas while enjoying the sounds of
their calls on our kayak mounted hydrophone which our guests
feel really heightens the experience. We also had a guest named
Julian that created an amazing Orca dance on the beach that
entertained his group and was luckily caught on video by another
guest. Stay tuned for this video later in the summer, I think
all will find it amusing.
Well we will wrap it up there for now.
July 24, 2004
An amazing Orca encounter on the July 19-23! Our group had an
encounter as, we think it was A33, came
over and repeatedly swam around and under each of our kayaks
calling the entire time. We had the hydrophone in and listened
to the calls as we all watched this amazing animal as it circled us,
spending over a minute entertaining us as if it were trained to
do so. The greatest part is that we had not one, but two video
cameras running and got excellent footage of this very special
Orca encounter. We will have the video on the web site later
this year.
July 29, 2004
This past week has seen more pods enter the area allowing for
some great encounters. A few times our group did not know where
to look as the Killer Whales swam by. Another successful Orca
Encounter.
Aug 4, 2004
More Orca and Humpback whales in the Strait on this trip. One
highlight was having over two hundred Pacific White sided
Dolphins swim all around our kayaks! As Diana B. (one of our
guests,) said, "It was surreal" The dolphins were jumping
completely out of the water as they raced past us down the
channel. A while later we sat in our kayaks near the "cliff" as
a group of about 10 dolphins played all around us as if they
were entertaining at a show.
August 22, 2004
This is the month for bioluminescence! What a thrill seeing the
water glow around the orcas as they swam in our bay at night.
And the weather! We have had the summer of a lifetime on the
coast with hot sunshine days and star studded skies by night and
just a sprinkle every now and then to keep the fire ban away.
Have a great
summer!
