Orca / Killer Whales Sightings Report Killer Whales, Orcas, sightings report on Out For Adventure Tours into Johnstone Strait.
Whales Whales Whales! Our sea kayak trips have been seeing Killer Whales galore! Do to space limitations updates are chosen randomly, and only represent a few of our many tours that run. September 4 2006 John Bestfather's (OFA Sea Kayak Guide) most recent trip had groups of up to sixty whales around them and also witnessed (at least by VHF radio reports) the rescue of a swimming Black Bear. The Bear had apparently swam into the tidal current of Blackney Passage and continued swimming upstream making no headway. Finally someone towed a few logs out for the tired bear to climb onto, which it did. The exhausted bear was then to towed to shore were it regained its land lubber legs and abandoned the effort to become a whale.
August 30 2006 Amanda Mercer (OFA Sea Kayak Lead Guide) reported approximately eighty whales passing by our Orca Base Camp as well as a large group the following day swimming past their kayaks at close range while a few swam under their kayaks giving Amanda the chance to snap a "killer" picture of the Killer Whale with her clients camera as it came beside them.
August 15 2006 More Killer Whales, the guides are having a great time showing our guests the Killer Whales as well as our famous Temperate Rainforest Interp Hike to the remote research outpost. The biggest news for a group that just returned is the male Orca that was rubbing on our Base Camp beach! Right in front of our camp. You can't buy entertainment like this.
August 10 2006 Our groups have been reporting whale encounters almost every day! Both the Orca Expedition and the Orca Base Camp have been having tremendous viewing experiences from their kayaks.
July 20 2006 The most recent trip to come back reported many whale encounters including a resting line of Killer Whales that made for an awesome experience and some incredible photos. Guide Mike White has been crisscrossing the strait showing our guests whale after whale.
Guides Andrea and Amanda had whales swim under and around their group while they sat rafted up for the experience. "simply incredible" said guide Amanda Mercer, "best yet" was guide Andrea Eitle's comment. Their guests raved about the experience and some will be sending us photos capturing the event.
