Canoeing Quadra
Quadra
Island British Columbia
In
ancient times it was the canoe that was the mode of travel for the
indigenous peoples of the west coast that we now know as British
Columbia. The canoe allows the traveler easy access to protected
waters, and enables one to
jump out and explore almost anywhere along their route. It makes a
stable platform for photography and is quite easily lifted up on
ones shoulders and portaged to otherwise inaccessible waters. As
it was in the past, it still is today the perfect craft for this
one-of-a-kind tour.
Quadra Island Lakes and Ocean
Beginning on the
fresh water lakes of Quadra Island our canoeing route takes us on
a journey across the inland lakes of Quadra Island and
eventually over to the ocean, ending in the salt water of the Pacific
Ocean. A wonderful and unique experience, paddling from fresh water to salt water
all in one trip.
Quadra Island is nestled between Vancouver Island and the main
land British Columbia and is home to the largest chain of fresh
water lakes on a island in the Pacific North West. Lucky for
all, the lakes have been granted park status, thereby preserving
this fresh water paradise.

The
park is called Main Lake Provincial Park and is our departure
point for this canoeing tour.
We enjoy two spectacular days soaking up the sun while we discover
the remote shores of Main Lake, stopping for short hikes and of
course, swimming at some of the pristine fine sand beaches.
Another inspiring feature of the park is that the lakes collect
most of their water during the winter rainy months and during
the summer they heat up like bath water making ideal swimming
conditions. |

Quick Facts |
Midway through the trip we portage from the lakes to the ocean.
Here, in the safety of our protected inside passage we explore the
maze of islets and channels of Surge Narrows Marine Park and even
Octopus Islands Marine Park if our timing is right. Paddling now
on salt water we are able to see marine mammals such as seals,
porpoises, sea lions and a cornucopia of colours in the
inter-tidal zone with a myriad of life such as Limpets, sea anemones, Chitons and the list goes on. Exploring the tidal pools is an
adventure in itself that all our guests seem to enjoy both young
and old.
Come join us on a canoeing adventure of a lifetime. Quadra Island, British Columbia, Canada |
